What Is Roof Flashing for and How Can It Help Protect Your Home from Leaks?

Chimney and Skylight FlashingWhether you ask a common handyman or a licensed contractor with years of experience, they will tell you the same thing: roof flashing is one of the most crucial elements of the roofing process. If you want to prevent your roof from suffering damage that could lead to leaks and significant water damage, you have to get the best flashing available.

What’s Roof Flashing Made of?

Most of the time, roof flashing is made from galvanized steel, aluminum, or other metal that’s either water and rust resistant, or has been coated to withstand water and maintain its structural integrity for as long as possible.

Some types of flashing, on the other hand, are made from roofing felt, rubber or plastic. While these options can also offer good sealing capacity, they aren’t always the best choice in terms of style, heat-resistance, energy efficiency and durability.

Types of Flashing and How They Help Your Home

Depending on where the flashing is located, there are several types of flashing we can mention. Chimney flashing is commonly placed at the base of the chimney to protect it from water running down the side of the chimney or along the slope of the roof, and should be installed by a professional Dallas roofer with experience in flashing installation.

The flashing present between the vertical wall and the sloped roof is called continuous flashing. Along with step flashing, which makes the connection between the roof and the walls of dormers, this flashing is designed to protect your walls more directly, as without it, the water would run down through the crack between the roof and the wall, causing significant damage to your walls and ceilings in that particular area.
